Obituary for Roberto J. Apilan

Roberto J. Apilan
APILAN, Roberto Josol -
Passed away in peace on Tuesday February 27th, 2018 in Mississauga, Ontario at the age of 98. Roberto will be reunited together in heaven with his wife, soul mate and best friend, Florencia (nee Escandor). Roberto is survived by their five children and their spouses: Roneto and Marilyn, Ruben and Venancia, Lualhati, Roy and Rosemarie, and Ralph and Carlotta. He is further survived by his ten grandchildren and their spouses: Janis and Leonard Hudson, Lloyd, Gail and Gary Pong, Karen, Giselle and Justin Rosello, Sandee, Chrissy and Zayne Williams, Andrew and Young, Carlo, Alyssa and his six great grandchildren: Kaleia, Malachai, James, Phineas, Jericho, and Evangeline. God-willing, three more great grandchildren will be joining the family in the coming months.
Born on May 17th, 1919, in Calape, Bohol, Philippines, Roberto was the sixth of eight children of Juan Apilan and Juana Bagee Josol. Little brother to Maria, Dunisia, Benita, Urbano and Martin and older brother to Domingo and Florencia, he was the last surviving member of their family. In his mid-twenties, Roberto joined the guerilla forces and fought alongside the United States military during WWII. The events of this war ultimately led to an Independent Philippines. He was discharged from active duty when the war ended in 1946 at the age of 27.
Roberto and Florencia were married on July 11, 1948 in Bulod, Philippines. They settled in Makilala, North Cotabato before immigrating to Canada in 1986. They shared 60 years of marriage together, often travelling back to Makilala to visit friends and family, before her passing on January 28th, 2007.
Roberto will be fondly remembered as a good son and brother, a brave WWII soldier, a humble farmer, a hard-working lumberjack, a loving husband, a devoted father, a proud grandfather and an adoring great grandfather. In all these roles, Roberto has embodied the qualities of discipline, playfulness, perseverance and quiet strength which have formed the foundation of the Apilan family. Roberto is, and always will be, the rock that anchors the family during times of hardship, the voice of reason when emotion prevails, the compassionate heart when hearts are hardened, and the touch of humor that you hear when you least expect it.

You will forever be in our hearts, dearest Papa and beloved Lolo.
