Obituary for Oemar Halvorsen

Oemar Halvorsen
HALVORSEN, Oemar -
Dad always loved to hike, walk and explore new places with his family, wherever he lived and as time allowed. On October 17, 2017, Dad, Oemar Halvorsen, lying in his hospital room in Etobicoke General Hospital, was once again out walking, but this time with God. They had been on many close walks and talks together over the past months but this walk was longer than usual. While they stopped for a rest, I picture that God put a hand on Dad’s shoulder and said to Dad, “Instead of going back, let’s go to My House instead”. Without hesitation, Dad eagerly got up, and took one more step, out of time, into eternity… into God’s presence. But the journey is not over, it’s just started.
Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, And to present you faultless Before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy, To God our Savior, Who alone is wise, Be glory and majesty, Dominion and power, Both now and forever. Amen.
Jude 1:24, 25 NKJV
Remembering back, before his first walk, Dad came into this world on December 5, 1919 in Saxkjobing, Denmark. After learning to walk, he trekked almost 98 years, mostly hand in hand with his cherished wife Ellen as they shared the adventure. Along the way, they always found time to help other hikers and open their home to many in need of help and support .
Their roaming spirit took them to many intriguing corners of the world, so that as their young trekkers, Mette, Peter and Axel joined their hike, each joined in a different country. After a time, Mel joined Mette, Marlies joined Peter and Leona joined Axel. And more adventures began.
Gradually others joined, but making their own trails. The pathways were getting wonderfully crowded. Here is what the spreading crowd of trekkers looks like a this moment:
Dad, left on the trail, are his beloved hiking partner and wife Ellen, and his children Mette (Mel) Griffin, Peter (Marlies), and Axel (Leona) Halvorsen. Dad was cherished grandfather of Joseph (Alejandra) Griffin, Julia (David) Estrada, and Jesse (Candace) Halvorsen, and great-grandfather of Evelyn, Hailey, Scarlett, Anabelle, and A.J. Griffin, and Bethany Estrada.
We miss you Dad; you have left some good foot prints in all of our souls, each with a sense of adventure and intrigue, but most of all, wonder, as we have watched you grow in your walk with God, stepping fully into His presence.
A memorial service will be celebrated at Danish Lutheran Church, 72 Finch Avenue West, Toronto on Wednesday, October 25, 2017 at 11a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to The Salvation Army would be appreciated. Online condolences at newediukfuneralhome.com
